Upgrading Electrical in a Rosedale or Forest Hill Heritage Home: What to Expect
The houses that make Rosedale, Forest Hill and the Annex beautiful — plaster walls, original mouldings, hardwood, deep trim — are also the houses with the oldest wiring. Upgrading the electrical in one of them is a different job from a new build. Here is what to expect, and how we protect the house while we do it.
What we usually find
- Knob-and-tube wiring: original ungrounded wiring, still live in many older Toronto homes, and a common reason insurers ask for a rewire.
- Aluminum branch wiring in later additions or renovations.
- 60 or 100 amp service that was never meant for central air, a modern kitchen, EV charging or Lutron lighting.
- Old fuse boxes or obsolete panels, sometimes with years of add-on circuits behind them.
Protecting plaster and finishes
Plaster and lath doesn't patch like drywall, and original mouldings can't be replaced off the shelf. We plan routes through closets, basements, attics and existing cavities to keep openings few and small, and we fish wire behind walls wherever we can. Clean, concealed wiring and work that respects the design are the standard, not an upgrade.
Service and panel upgrade
Most heritage-home projects include a service upgrade, usually to 200 amps. We coordinate the Hydro disconnect and reconnect, file the ESA permit and book the inspection, so you never chase a utility or an inspector.
Plan it with the renovation
If walls are opening for a kitchen, bathroom or full renovation, that is the moment to rewire, upgrade the panel, add EV-charger capacity and plan Lutron lighting control — once, together, with one crew. Doing it in stages after the walls close costs more and disturbs the house twice.
Insurance and resale
A documented rewire and service upgrade, with ESA certificates, is what insurers and buyers' inspectors want to see. We give you the paperwork at the end of the job.

“Wen and his apprentices Nick and Dominic did a great job with the installation of LED lighting in my old house. They were fastidious and caring. They covered the furniture to protect it from dust. They worked efficiently. Outstanding work ethics.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to remove all the knob-and-tube wiring?
It depends on its condition and on your insurer. We inspect it and tell you what needs replacing now and what can be planned.
Will you have to open my plaster walls?
Usually only in a few planned spots. We route through closets, basements and attics and fish wire behind walls wherever possible.
Can we stay in the house during the work?
In most projects, yes. We plan the work in stages so the house keeps power most of the time and tell you in advance when it will be off.
Do you handle the ESA permit and Toronto Hydro?
Yes — the permit, the inspection and the Hydro disconnect and reconnect are all ours.
