Two different wiring types, two different scopes of work. Tron Electrical & Automation inspects and remediates aluminum branch wiring, and identifies, replaces and removes knob-and-tube wiring, across Toronto and the GTA — with the ESA documentation insurers ask for.
Services: Knob & tube rewiring • Aluminum-to-copper pigtailing • Full & partial home rewires • Insurance compliance • ESA permits
Response Within 1 Hour. Premium Service.
We prioritize insurance-deadline jobs and can often schedule a site visit within days — most partial rewires or pigtailing jobs are completed and ESA-certified within one to two weeks.
We fish new wire through existing wall cavities wherever possible, only opening drywall where it's structurally necessary — most homes need far less demolition than owners expect.
We assess your specific wiring and panel condition first and recommend the least invasive fix that satisfies code and your insurer — often copper pigtailing instead of a full rewire.

Brittle, ungrounded knob & tube circuits replaced with modern wiring.

Insurance-compliant copper wiring installed with proper grounding throughout.

Labelled circuits and ESA certification ready for your insurer.

Knob & tube wiring has no ground and brittle, decades-old insulation. Aluminum wiring oxidizes and loosens at connections, creating heat and fire risk. Both are routinely flagged by home insurers for non-renewal or cancellation.
Tron Electrical has rewired and remediated older GTA homes since 1972 — minimally invasive methods, ESA permits, and documentation your insurer will accept.
We recommend the least invasive fix that satisfies your insurer. Not every home needs a full rewire — we assess first and only recommend what's actually required.
Full or partial replacement of ungrounded, brittle knob & tube circuits.
Connect copper pigtails at outlets and switches to eliminate oxidation and heat risk.
ESA-certified paperwork insurers accept for renewal or new policy underwriting.
Forest Hill, Rosedale, Leaside, The Annex and other century-home neighbourhoods.
Replace incompatible switches and receptacles with devices rated for aluminum wiring.
Rewire exposed walls during a renovation for minimal disruption and cost.
Aluminum branch-circuit wiring was installed in many Toronto and GTA homes built in the late 1960s and 1970s. The wire itself is not the problem — the connections are. Aluminum expands, contracts and oxidizes differently than copper, so terminations at receptacles, switches, splices and panel lugs loosen and heat over time.
Aluminum wiring work is remediation work: inspect every accessible connection, correct what is failing, and use devices and methods rated for aluminum. A full rewire is rarely necessary.
Knob-and-tube is a different situation entirely. It is the original wiring in many pre-1950 Toronto homes: two separate conductors run through porcelain tubes and supported on knobs, with no bonding conductor and rubber-and-cloth insulation that is now decades past its service life. There is no way to remediate the connections and keep it — knob-and-tube is replaced, not repaired.
The first step is identification. Many homes have partial knob-and-tube: some circuits were replaced during past renovations and others were simply abandoned in place, spliced into, or buried under blown-in insulation, which is a specific hazard because the conductors were designed to shed heat into open air.
Removal and rewiring is the permanent resolution: new grounded circuits fished through existing wall and ceiling cavities wherever possible, new devices and boxes, abandoned knob-and-tube taken out rather than left in place, and the panel updated to carry the new circuits. Renovations are the ideal time to do it, since walls and ceilings are already open. Where a home is occupied and finished, we phase the work circuit by circuit and open drywall only where it is genuinely necessary.
